The New "GOLDilocks" Economy

This article was originally published for the benefit of subscribers on November 4, 2007. The story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears" initially began with a cute little girl having golden hair curiously walking into the house of the three bears and being scared out after a rude awakening. The new and revised economic version of “GOLDilocks and the Three Bears" is somewhat different. The modern version goes something like this: GOLDilocks (AKA gold) walks into the lair of the three bears (AKA Nasdaq, DOW and S&P 500 Indices in a bear market, yes, the pun is severely intended) and scares them out. The things that GOLDilocks “did" to metaphorically make them leave their lair are discussed below. The traditional view of the Goldilocks economy is being rewritten during these times.

The big news last weekend was CitiGroup temporarily withholding dividend payments and having an emergency meeting to determine how to correct or “cover up" any derivative problems.

Charitable Contribution Deduction New Requirements for 2007 Returns

Once upon a time in the Land of the Misinformed, there was a myth that all charitable contributions of cash were deductible even if you did not have a receipt of any type to prove the contribution was made. At the end of each calendar year the good people of the land would throw all of their loose change into church collections and street corner holiday collection kettles and containers and then when they went to see their Tax Preparer or they prepared their own personal returns they would estimate how much loose change they had contributed for the tax year and take a deduction for contributions to miscellaneous organized charities. Sometimes they would do that estimate based on a random percentage that they believed was an acceptable percentage of charitable contributions that would not trigger an audit by the Tax Collector of the Land.

(AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-16 10:51 GMT: Credit Suisse launches private bank ops in Austria, eyes Easter European clients

ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Credit Suisse Group announced the launch of its private banking business in Austria, with the bank now operating offices in Vienna and Salzburg, focusing on high net worth individuals and families as well as businesses.

The expansion is being undertaken with an eye on Eastern European clients but also German expatriates, the Swiss bank said in a statement.

The private banking segment's total potential business volume in Central and Eastern Europe, excluding Poland, is estimated at 52 bln usd, a Credit Suisse spokeswoman said.

"Clients from Eastern Europe are important for us. Austria is an important hub for this kind of business," she noted.

While the bank did not provide any concrete figures for the Austrian private banking business, she said that Credit Suisse plans to grow faster than the local market.
