Health Care and Banking

The face of Nevada State Bank has stepped away from the limelight.

Bill Martin, 65, the friendly banker seen on commercials and print advertisements,

Martin was chairman of the bank since 2000, and president and chief executive until his resignation in early September.

At the time, he told In Business he would stay on the board until December 2008.

I spoke with Martin after he announced his retirement to the board Oct. 15. He told me, simply, that it was time to retire from the board.

"Things just kind of changed," Martin said. "It just didn't work for me. It seemed like a good time to retire."

He has no plans to resign from the other boards he serves on, including the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Water Conservation Coalition and the Public Education Foundation.

EU Almunia Agrees With ECB That Forex Moves Have Been Brutal

BRUSSELS -(Dow Jones)- Recent moves in foreign exchange markets have been brutal, European Union Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia said Monday. Almunia noted that he agrees with the views of the European Central Bank president, Jean-Claude Trichet, who has repeatedly described foreign exchange movements as "brutal." E.U. policy makers are particularly worried about the euro's rise against the dollar. The euro is currently hovering around $1.4669, close to its record high against the dollar of $1.4753. Almunia also said that growth in the euro zone is expected to slow next year, with the chance of an even sharper slowdown if recent financial market turmoil sparked by sub-prime mortgages in the U.S. continues. He added that a sharper-than-expected slowdown in the U.S.

The smiling son betrayed by his country

GORDON Gentle faced the future with a smile. As a pupil at Bonnyholm Primary School in Pollok, Glasgow, his dreams extended no further than the football field. As a young man, unemployed but anxious to better himself, he was persuaded by the army recruitment officers at his local job centre of the benefits a military career would bring: a driving licence and a trade as an electrician. The lure of foreign travel was also mentioned but it was to Canada or Germany, rather than Iraq or Afghanistan.

Instead, Gordon Gentle's life ended at the age of 19 with the blast of a bomb in Basra. The armoured Land Rover in which he was travelling should have been fitted with an electronic counter-measure (ECM), a device that would have prevented a detonation, and which was sitting in a store just 800 yards from where he was killed.
